Farmers markets abound. They combine local foods with traditional handicrafts and arts. Most towns have one and I think the one in Tejina, near Tacaronte is particularly worth visiting- it bustles Saturday and Sunday mornings.

There are incredible circuits of specialised traders making the rounds around the island sponsored by the Government. They include Gastronomy fairs, Wine fairs (the wine museum at El Sauzal is fabulous), Book fairs and Art & Crafts as well as local fetes and events which combine all three.

Difficult to know where to start!! Santa Cruz, with its big department stores and elegant shops is a must for any serious shopper- 'Maya' and 'El Cortes Ingles' combined with this elegant colonial city's bars, restaurants and tree lined streets and parks is a great day out.
The most fascinating shopping experience is in Santa Cruz on a Sunday morning when a huge market combines with a car boot sale, an antiques area and the African Market, full of herbs, spices, flowers and Lord knows what. |
Tourist markets abound and are interesting because Tenerife is a heady blend of European, African and South American and this is reflected in the colour, liveliness and diversity of what is on offer.
And car-boots... The best car boot on the island is on Sunday mornings at Guargacho and all over the island are 'Rastro', second hand shops. Many Europeans settled in Tenerife from the 1960's onwards and it is extraordinary what can be found in these places. |
