PYRAMIDS GUIMAR
These ancient, mysterious monuments to an unknown culture were discovered by Norwegian adventurer (Kon Tiki expeditions) Thor Heyerdhal. He was convinced they were part of a world wide pyramid culture and helped design the brilliant museum that includes the pramids themselves. Go there on the Summer soltice and watch as the last ray of sun breaks in two beams either side of the main sacrificial alter. |
EL SOUZAL
Best museum on the island and FREE. Learn how Shakespear was paid in Canary wine and how Nelson famously lost his arm here. For a nominal sum of €3 or so you can taste the wines and cheeses of the island. They can organise wine tasting evenings and their quality restaurant has magnificent views of Las Palma and the setting sun. |
VOLCANO MUSEUM EL TEIDE
Great interactive space- make sure to watch the video, in your language- scary but informative. |
VOLCANO MUSEUM SANTIAGO DEL TEIDE
Great fun exhibit re-living the last eruption of Teide that brought a black lava flow perilously close to the then remote settlement of Santiago. The use of tika-tape, the only communication available at the time, is quite brilliant. Lots of great restaurants nearby and go in late February to enjoy the local Almond Blossom trail, quite spectacular. |
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM SANTA CRUZ
Interesting range of artefacts covering the island's flora and fauna as well as an extraordinary exhibit of Guanche mummies - their fingers in particular are long and elegant, quite remarkable. |
POTTERY MUSEUM - CANDELARIA
Candelaria was famous for it women potters and the museum recreates their lost world in an evocative way. There are still a few potters keeping the old ways alive on the island and making beautiful aborigenal pieces. |
